Sabula52070 Sabula, known as the Island City, has a unique setting and is one mile long and .25 miles wide. It is completely surrounded by water, with lakes on the west side and the Mississippi river on the other sides. The 710 residents are part of river town that has upgraded itself and is growing with commercial and light industry interests. Tourism is a big draw for the community. A bridge brings traffic from Illinois to the city. The Jackson County Welcome Center is located just west of the "island city" on Hwy. 64. Sabula is a sportsman's paradise. At the south edge of the island we find South Sabula Lakes Park with camping facilities and boat marina. For relaxation, nothing is better than sitting on the shore of the Mississippi watching Big River roll by. Seven miles north of Sabula is the Green Island State Wildlife Refuge; a 3400 acre wetland popular with fishermen and hunters. City Parks & Recreation South Sabula Lakes Park: Located on the south edge of Sabula is 35 acres managed by the Jackson County Conservation Board. The 14 acre park lies on the banks of the Mississippi River and the 150 acre South Sabula Lake allows the boaters and fishermen easy access to campsites. There is a picnic area, pavilion, showers, boat ramp trailer dump station and playground equipment. Campground is open April through October, weather permitting. Camping sites are provided with 20 and 30 amp electrical service. John Wall Park: River front play area with picnic tables, shade and playground equipment. River Front Park: 500 block of River Street. Pavilion with BBQ cook sites and electricity provided. Bill Cotton Park: 500 block of Lake Street. Pavilion with electricity provided.
