Sites on the National Register of Historic Places
Jackson County has a long and colorful history. Woodland Indian mounds, dotting the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River valley, remind us that this has been a hospitable locale for thousands of years. Several Native American tribes made their homes here; they, too, were drawn by its simple beauty. The first Euro-American settlers came in 1833. Jackson County was established in 1837 and organized in 1838. The early settlers were farmers, millers and shopkeepers. They left behind a legacy of historic wonderful festivals and fascinating architecture.

Jackson County has many sites and districts on the National Register of Historic Places. For more information contact the Jackson County Historical Museum at 563-652-5020 or the Jackson County Welcome Center at 800-342-1837.
